September days
With a date in my diary to teach a workshop in Surrey one day last week, we thought we’d take the opportunity to spend a few days in a favourite location. We’d planned a weekend in Sussex last January, to go to a party celebrating our friends’ birthdays but events earlier in that month put those plans on hold. A call to The Star soon sorted that out and our booking remained there until we were ready.
That time was now!
All was set then, until a surprise call from dear Californian friends, Ellis and Mary, with the news that they were going to be in London that week and it was too good an opportunity not to meet up. We agreed, but explained where we planned to be and within a few minutes, they’d amended their plans and joined us at The Star!
We met them from the train, surprised to find that there’s no open station there and access to the platform is for ticket holders only. The days of watching the train approach or waving a fond farewell as it disappears out of sight are gone in Polegate, at least. We waited along with others in the cramped lobby then to greet them: the first time since 2023, not that any of us had changed one bit!!
They fell in love with The Star as we have done. We all appreciate relaxed comfort, friendly staff and beautiful surroundings.
I’ve written here before how I love the artworks, always enhanced by flowers
and the easy going atmosphere suits us very well indeed.
We were happy in our favourite room, where the furnishings are right up my alley
and the small details make me smile every time. Those oak leaf handles! 🥰
Quiet, professional with no detail left undone. As near perfect as it gets.
I even like the view from “our” window, noticing that the owner of the house across the street still has their bright blue Porsche sports car!
Anyway, we spent a delightful couple of days sitting in the sunny garden, catching up over glasses of this and that, never lost for something to talk about. The conversation takes over from where we left off, as it does with lovely friends like this.
We pottered about Alfriston a little, spent time in Much Ado about Books and found amusement in little things we noticed around the place.
This one references a children’s TV programme from the 1960s.
The lovely thing was, we always had a cosy place to return to.
As always, the time flew and we returned home and our friends resumed their travels. What a splendid way to spend a couple of days!

Not only that, but someone got a wink from “the lady in the Dining Room” too 😘
