An Elegant Sufficiency

The car was held together with sticky tape

There are some days which stand out in our memories as particularly special. Though I like to record and celebrate the ordinary days when nothing much happens, it’s keeping the memories of those one-off times when I am glad I wrote it all down and kept some pictures too. I treasure so many of those days here and will quite often return to them, either to check a small detail, a misremembered event or simply to enjoy a bit of nostalgia. I like to think I’m quite organised in keeping my memories in a way that I can find them again.

Imagine my surprise last evening then, when uploading a short video to YouTube, I spotted a treasure than I had completely forgotten about.

I watched it through once and saw my Hero’s expression change from one of concentration to a broad grin.

“The best day ever”, he said.

We played it again and a third time, both remembering the exact situation, the mood and the gaiety of that day.

“I’ve got to share the link with Jane”, I said, and quickly copied and pasted it into FB Messenger. Within seconds she replied from the other side of the Atlantic

“that was a day I’ll never forget” she wrote, and even though it was late here, we continued to share our happy memories of the many small incidents that kickstarted our treasured friendship. For as Jane observed in her reply, we didn’t really know each other very well until that day.

By now, it was well past our bedtime and as we said goodnight, we went upstairs with smiles on our faces and I’d like to think Jane was smiling too.

What made the day so special? What was the video all about? I’ve referred to my blog posts about it previously but in case I’m not the only one who enjoys being back in Mumbai, where the events in the short video above took place in the Citywalk shoe shop in the photo above (whilst our driver slept on his car, parked under the tree), then here’s the link

The day didn’t end there, however, and went on into a second blog post here.

My word, what fun times we’ve shared and how lovely it is to remember them. At the same time, here’s hoping we can look forward to a few more days like that too!
