As special as we'd remembered

As special as we'd remembered

We’d booked a table for the four of us at Host. Our dear friends Ellis and Mary had discovered this restaurant the last time we were in Copenhagen and we were keen to return, hoping that it would be as good as we remembered.

We chose the same “Evening at Host” menu, opting for salmon for our main course.

Since none of us was driving, we went for the wine pairing too. It looked interesting!

The restaurant occupies a faily unassuming corner location and we walked from our hotel, finding it easily thanks to google maps! It was just as we remembered; stylish and slightly quirky with recycled wood and large plants/small trees. Service was seamless, both friendly and professional and delivered in perfectly spoken English, which was just as well for watching four seasons of Borgen really is far from adequate preparation!

When the first dish, the appetiser, arrived, we immediately remembered how much we liked the style here. Morsels of food arranged upon pebbles, artfully done. This first plate was of several fresh crudités with a smoked creamy dip, as delicious as it looked, especially those two perfect cherries. We were off to a great start.

There followed a succession of plates. This one, the scallop dish from the menu just as artfully arranged with fresh sprigs of flowers. In between, though, were small “surprises” which were not on the menu. Two of them, in particular, were especially delicious.

The first was served as a small cup of thyme leaves, into which was poured a warm, creamy soup from a small teapot. Only when we noticed a lack of cutlery did we spot the straw - a piece of straw - through which to drink the soup. Hard to describe, but all four of us could have happily had seconds and possibly thirds!

The other "surprise” came before the blueberry dessert and we were advised that the small pine cone on top was to be eaten first, for it introduced the flavours of the mousse and ice cream underneath. Was it a real pine cone? I have no idea, but the undoubtedly Scandinavian flavours were distinctive and did exactly what they were supposed to. I was left wanting more again!

Finally, the blueberry dessert, served with a sparkling red wine, another of the rather different wine pairings which belied the simple descriptions in the menu.

It was time for a walk back to the hotel. As we passed the Tivoli gardens, there was the sound of excitement coming from a scary-looking ride as people were being lifted high into the air and spun round.

Not tonight Josephine!
